1. My (bootleg) night at the Las Vegas Grand Prix
The Sporting Tribune's Will Despart writes about his adventure of trying to catch a glimpse of the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Just like that, it’s all over. Years of planning, combined with months of construction and frustration for Vegas residents culminated with a week of some of the most extreme upscale debauchery imaginable. As one would expect.
The race itself was a formality. Max Verstappen of course took home his 18th Grand Prix victory of the season, extending his own record despite an early five-second time penalty and other issues throughout the drive.
I was among the majority of Las Vegans priced out of getting into the race, and one of the many media members lost in the sea of credential requests.
Still, I was determined to get as close to the action as possible. My logic was that we went through months of traffic delays for this billionaire fantasy spectacle, why not at least celebrate the night at a bar nearby?
I had low hopes of actually seeing any of the cars, given the absurd safeguards put in place by F1 brass to prevent passersby from catching a glimpse of the race. Which goes to say, I was genuinely shocked at how well last night went from a viewing perspective. Albeit a bootleg one.
2. UCLA overwhelms Chaminade in 2023 Maui Invitational
The Chaminade Silverswords lost for the second time in as many days to one of men's college basketball's blue bloods, falling to UCLA, 76-48.
Day 2 of the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational brought a familiar fate as the opener for the host Chaminade Silverswords (1-4, 0-1 PacWest), giving another men’s college basketball blue blood in UCLA a challenge in the semifinal of the consolation bracket of the tournament before falling to the Bruins, 76-48. The Swords entered the locker rooms down 15 and cut the deficit as low as 10 with 14 minutes to play before a near-seven-minute scoring drought allowed UCLA to pull away for a larger final margin.
Things did not start well for the Swords, struggling offensively to open the day’s second game while seeing UCLA push the pace and get to the rim at will as the Bruins took a lead as big as 24 in the first 10 minutes of play and forcing multiple early timeouts by Chaminade head coach Eric Bovaird. The timeouts proved to be a calming measure for the 13th-year head coach’s team, sparking an 11-2 CUH run to make it a 15-point game with just under eight minutes left in the first half. The teams traded turnovers and stops for most of the remainder of the opening 20 minutes, each mustering six more points before heading into the locker rooms with the same 15-point margin separating the two, 36-21.
3. Lakers decimate Jazz in wire-to-wire victory, 131-99
The Lakers win Group A of the In-Season Tournament to advance to the quarterfinals, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Grant Mona.
The Lakers remain undefeated in the In-Season Tournament with a dominating 32 point victory on Tuesday at home. From the get-go, it was energy, flow, and transition that got the Lakers out to an early double digit lead which then turned into a blowout by halftime.
The offense was led by a balanced effort with seven lakers in double figures and Anthony Davis leading the way with 26 points and 16 rebounds to go along with 2 steals. He was active on the boards, controlling within the offense, and dominant in the paint, which I am sure Laker fans have been waiting to see on a consistent basis.
4. Kings undefeated on the road, beat the Coyotes, 4-1
The Kings have won eight straight road games to open the 2023-24 season, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Kamran Nia.
The Los Angeles Kings have been the most successful road team in the NHL early in the 2023-24 season. On Monday, their streak continued to eight away games undefeated after a 4-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes.
The Kings started quickly, as 3:36 into the first period, Trevor Moore scored a short-handed goal after using his fast speed to close off the defender’s angle.
5. Clippers find cohesion with second straight against Spurs
Los Angeles claimed its first road win of the season in San Antonio, 124-99, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Marisa Flores.
After winning by 40 points about three weeks ago, the Los Angeles Clippers gave no quarter to the San Antonio Spurs in their 25-point win Monday night.
Los Angeles outscored the Spurs throughout all four quarters (33-27, 33-28, 25-22, 33-22) to advance to 5-7 on the season and force San Antonio to suffer their ninth straight loss this year.
The dire victory comes after the Clippers went through a rut of their own with new acquisition James Harden. Since losing five straight earlier in November and experimenting with lineups, the Clippers now initiate a win streak with a seemingly tighter offensive demeanor.
6. Chargers Joey Bosa ‘likely’ headed to IR with foot sprain
Chargers pass rusher Joey Bosa will miss time with a foot sprain but avoids serious injury, writes The Sporting Tribunes Fernando Ramirez.
The Chargers defense takes a hit as they lose star pass rusher Joey Bosa for some time as he is ‘likely’ headed to IR with a foot sprain, according to head coach Brandon Staley.
Bosa got hurt in the first quarter when he engaged with tackle Rasheed Walker. He suddenly raised his right leg and hobbled on his left.
He hopped toward the sideline and was looked at by the trainers. After the Chargers’ defense stopped the Packers on fourth down, they ran over to Bosa and comforted him.
He was carted off and broke down as the cart headed up the tunnel.
It could have been much worse, but he will miss some time. Staley said it is yet to be determined if Bosa will return to the field this season.
