1. Herbert’s near perfect game leads Chargers over Bears, 30-13
The Sporting Tribune's Fernando Ramirez writes Justin Herbert had one of his best games when the Chargers needed it the most.
There had been some chatter questioning whether Justin Herbert was the problem in the last two losses, where he had his lowest yards and completion percentage.
He wasn’t.
In fact, in the Chargers 30-13 victory over the Chicago Bears, Herbert was the solution.
Herbert completed 31 of 40 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns en route to get his team to a manageable 3-4.
“I saw really good rhythm and timing,” head coach Brandon Staley said. “I thought that he was decisive. When he is playing like that, he is going to have numbers like that; 31-of-40 for 300 [yards], three touchdowns and no interceptions. I just thought that his feet and his eyes were working together, and that is when he is at his best.”
2. Cowboys rout Rams 43-20, Stafford leaves game with thumb injury
The Rams suffered their worst loss of the season and may have also lost quarterback Matthew Stafford with an injury, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Lauren Jones.
Rams’ quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered a thumb injury on a two-point conversion play in in the third quarter according to head coach Sean McVay. Stafford, however, was visibly gripping his thumb prior to that play. Ultimately, Rams’ backup quarterback Brett Rypien entered the game to replace Stafford for the final play of the third quarter.
The first offensive drive for Rypien resulted in the Rams’ turning the ball over on downs. He completed five of his 10 passes for 42 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Rypien stated after the game that it was clear he would have to take over for Stafford after the first drive of the second half.
“Matthew came off the field, kind of re-aggravated the thumb there,” Rypien observed. “Just had a conversation with Z-Rob (QBs coach), asked if I was going, and he said I was going.”
3. Clippers have great bounce back game, beat Spurs 123-83
Physicality, efficiency, and disruption lead to a Clipper blowout of Spurs in Wembanyama's Los Angeles debut, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Grant Mona.
The Clippers mantra this season has been “Give No Quarter” and Sunday night they achieved a full game of that. From start to finish, it was pure domination of the Spurs on the side of the Clippers, with a 40 point blowout that rested the starters for the entirety of the 4th quarter.
From the opening tip it seemed this team had an edge to them after a disappointing loss in Utah a few nights before. While many on the team took it personally and seemed unusually disappointed so early in the season, they came out with a different type of energy back home.
Paul George has had it cooking as of late, not just on offense, but defense as well, tallying five steals in the first quarter alone, the most he has had in a quarter ever.
4. Young players shine for the USWNT against Colombia
Mia Fishel, Jaedyn Shaw, and Alyssa Thompson led the USWNT to a big victory, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Kamran Nia.
The United States women’s national soccer team was experiencing a period of consistency to a fault entering Sunday. In the first of two friendlies against Colombia on Oct. 26, the USWNT’s play looked similar to how it did in the 2023 World Cup, where they lost in the Round of 16. Their defense was outstanding, preventing Colombia from scoring. But only a few chances looked dangerous, and their lineup closely reflected the ones that led them short of their goal in Australia and New Zealand.
On Sunday, the USWNT kept the trend going in their starting lineup, with arguably the most significant change being Casey Murphy starting in goal over Alyssa Naeher. But they looked more dangerous in the attack, scoring three goals; they also drew 27 fouls. However, much of such efforts that led to their 3-0 victory came from a flurry of second-half personnel changes; interim head coach Twila Kilgore brought on 22 and 18-year-old forwards, Mia Fishel and Jaedyn Shaw, and the game shifted.
5. Lakers lose tough overtime game against Kings
Lakers lose their first game of a back-to-back in Sacramento, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Rey Moralde.
This probably isn’t ideal for the Lakers.
The Lakers had to rally back yet again. But as they were able to extend the game to an overtime, the Sacramento Kings’ youth, vigor, and spitfire shooting overwhelmed Los Angeles. Kevin Huerter put it away with a clutch three and the Kings won, 132-127. And besides the loss, the reason why this wasn’t ideal was because the Lakers have to play another game on Monday night. Back-to-backs are kind of awful.
The Kings came out early and just kept getting those buckets. While the Lakers didn’t do that bad on the offensive end, the Kings were just on another level in getting those baskets. It was 41-28 after one quarter.
6. Hawai’i football hits new low, suffers 1st home shutout in 25 years
After hitting what seemed like rock-bottom last week at New Mexico, Hawai'i found deeper depths during homecoming against SJSU, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Paul Brecht.
It was a homecoming game to remember for some players connected with the University of Hawai’i football program as San Jose State visited Mānoa for the first time in two years.
The problem? Those players suit up for the San Jose State Spartans now.
The Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors (2-7, 0-4 MWC) fell to the San Jose State Spartans (4-5, 3-2 MWC) Saturday night, 35-0, as UH lost on homecoming night for the first time since 2016. SJSU has now won four consecutive meetings between the programs, the longest winning streak for the Spartans in the series.
