1. Harden traded to LA Clippers in a blockbuster deal
The Clippers have traded for James Harden, who will join Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Russell Westbrook to form a super team.
After months of speculation, James Harden will finally be traded from the Philadelphia 76ers to the LA Clippers to create the NBA’s latest super team.
Harden, a 10-time NBA All-Star, will be dealt to Los Angeles along with P.J. Tucker and Filip Petrisev in exchange for Marcus Morris, Robert Covington, Nic Batum, KJ Martin, a 2028 unprotected first-round pick, two second-round picks, a 2029 pick swap and another first round pick from a third team.
Harden, who was the NBA MVP in 2018, joins All-Stars Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Russell Westbrook to create one of the most star-studded teams in the league.
2. Lakers barely escape Magic at home, 106-103
The Lakers get to .500 after their win over the Orlando Magic but it wasn’t easy, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Rey Moralde.
The Lakers have a lot to work on.
It’s a long season so we can be patient about it. They did hand the Orlando Magic their first loss of the season in a game that was very ugly, 106-103.
It looked like it was going to be an easy day at the office as, for the first time this season, the Lakers didn’t go down in double figures in the first quarter. The Lakers looked their best in that stretch as they had a nice flow on both ends of the floor. We even got a poster dunk from D’Angelo Russell!
3. Golden Knights move to 9-0-1 with shoot-out victory over Canadiens
The Golden Knights extended their point streak to 10 games to start the season with a 3-2 shoot-out victory against the Montreal Canadiens, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Will Despart.
The Golden Knights won their second straight game via shoot-out on Monday night, taking a 3-2 victory over the Canadiens to push their point streak to 10 games to start the season.
Despite being 9-0-1, the Knights haven't really been playing their finest hockey. They've taken advantage of a schedule that's a bit on the weaker side but it hasn't been easy, requiring multiple comebacks and extra period efforts.
"We've got to play better", captain Mark Stone told reporters following the game. "You never want to give up 40 shots to a team that traveled (three time zones) yesterday. We want to jump on those teams and impose our will."
"It's just a little off", Stone continued. "If it was way off, we would be sitting here shaking our heads, being very concerned. But the record wouldn't be what it is."
4. Raiders offensive struggles continue in 26-14 loss to Lions
The Raiders gained a season-low 157 yards on offense in a 26-14 loss to the Lions, writes The Sporting Tribune’s W.G. Ramirez.
The Las Vegas Raiders' inept offense continued to struggle Monday night, even with the return of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Garoppolo threw a league-leading ninth interception one play after the Raiders recovered a fumble in the first quarter and the Detroit Lions beat Las Vegas 26-14.
Though the Raiders found the end zone twice, their defense scored one of the touchdowns, a 75-yard interception return from Marcus Peters.
5. USC's last Bay Area Weekender was a memorable, albeit unsatisfying trip
USC won their last game in the Bay Area as a member of the Pac-12 but nearly gave up 50 points to Cal, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Adam Bradford.
One of USC's long-standing traditions came to an end over the weekend when the Trojans traveled up to Cal for the last ever Weekender.
For decades, the Trojans' annual trip to the Bay Area to take on either Stanford (in even years) or Cal (in odd years) has become a cherished tradition amongst the fan base. One weekend each fall, thousands of USC fans make the relatively short trip up the coast of California to watch the football team play on the road. Throughout the weekend—popularly dubbed the "Weekender" by fans—you can spot people in USC gear all over the region, especially at the traditional Friday night pep rally in San Francisco.
But after many years and countless trips, the tradition has come to an end. With the Trojans headed to the Big Ten next year and Stanford and Cal set to join the ACC, this past weekend's trip up to Cal was the final USC Weekender for the foreseeable future.
6. Hawai’i football hits new low, suffers 1st home shutout in 25 years
After hitting what seemed like rock-bottom last week at New Mexico, Hawai'i found deeper depths during homecoming against SJSU, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Paul Brecht.
It was a homecoming game to remember for some players connected with the University of Hawai’i football program as San Jose State visited Mānoa for the first time in two years.
The problem? Those players suit up for the San Jose State Spartans now.
The Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors (2-7, 0-4 MWC) fell to the San Jose State Spartans (4-5, 3-2 MWC) Saturday night, 35-0, as UH lost on homecoming night for the first time since 2016. SJSU has now won four consecutive meetings between the programs, the longest winning streak for the Spartans in the series.
