1. Golden Knights arrive to games suited and booted
The Vegas Golden Knights each have their own style of suits and shoes for gameday. The stroll into the arena has become akin to a fashion show walk, writes The Sporting Tribune’s W.G. Ramirez.
The Vegas Golden Knights made their way to the tarmac Tuesday, ready to board their charter flight to South Florida for Games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers.
They sported polo shirts and slacks, some wearing designer sunglasses, and their carry-on bags for the journey
But when team insider Gary Lawless interviewed Alex Pietrangelo during the flight for a story, he asked the veteran defenseman what he packed for what may be the team's most important business trip in franchise history.
"I only have business suits," Lawless wrote in a tweet. "You should know that about me by now."
2. How Sydney Leroux’s children willed her return
Cassius and Roux were everything for Sydney Leroux in making her comeback, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Kamran Nia.
When forward Sydney Leroux suffered an ankle injury last season, she played through the pain. But after appearing in three games for Angel City, doctors explained to her that the injury could be career-ending if she continued playing.
Leroux had a micro-fracture in her talus, a bone in the ankle, and chose to have surgery. But after surgery, the recovery path was not easy. She had numerous days where she could not walk and was in a boot for over four months.
The recovery affected Leroux's mental health.
“I didn’t really know about the severity of my injury, so when I found out it’s a possibility for me to learn how to walk, never mind play soccer again, I was scared,” Leroux said. “I feel like I have been scared for a long time. Coming back from an injury, no one really talks about the mental part and the mental toll that it takes,” Leroux said. “There were some really hard times, and I didn’t know if I could do this again.”
3. Angels win behind huge games from Rengifo, Moniak
Luis Rengifo's home-run and RBI single and Mickey Moniak's bases clearing double led the Angels to a 6-2 victory over the Cubs Wednesday night, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Brandon Deutsch.
Mickey Moniak was the Angels best hitter for two weeks when he made his season debut a few weeks back, launching 4 homers and a few other huge extra-base hits in that span. However, Moniak had gone just 3 for his last 22 and has been battling for playing time to stay in the Majors. There is always pressure on Moniak to perform with Hunter Renfroe, Taylor Ward, and Mike Trout on the roster, but also with former top prospect Jo Adell on his tail as well (Adell was called up on Wednesday and will likely start tomorrow in place of Moniak against LHP Drew Smyly).
There isn’t much room for error, and Moniak stepped up in a big way on Wednesday night launching a bases clearing double with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning to give the Angels a 6-2 lead. After the game Moniak shared his thoughts on what was going through his head before the double “I was trying to put that ball in play with two strikes. Got the pitch I was looking for, and delivered. I’ve been feeling pretty good at the plate recently”. Moniak is right, as he had been smoking the ball and just hadn't gotten luck to go his way until the bottom of the 6th inning Wednesday night. Even on his previous at bat prior to the double, Moniak just missed a home-run, hitting it to the warning track off of Jameson Taillon in the bottom of the 5th inning.
If his hitting wasn’t enough justification for him to be an every-day player, Moniak also made one of the most impressive catches all year going into the stands on a ball hit foul to snag an out for the Angels. Later on in the top of the 8th inning, Moniak made a diving catch to prevent a single. Though the sample size is small (just 56 AB’s) Moniak has an outstanding OPS of .982 with 10 RBI’S this season. Wednesday night showed how important Moniak is to the Angels and what a spark he can continue to be if given playing time.
4. Dodgers losing streak hits four with loss to Reds
The Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-6 on Wednesday night as the Dodgers’ losing streak is now at a season-high four games, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Jake Dicker.
There's no fun way to write about a failed experiment. Andrew Friedman took a chance on Noah Syndergaard and Noah Syndergaard has been incredibly disappointing. Given his comments following his last start, he'd be the first to tell you that. The story following Syndergaard's last two starts has been the same so I'll keep this one brief. The DFA is coming.
Syndergaard has benefitted from the fact that the Dodger rotation is incredibly thin with Urias, May, and Ryan Pepiot on the IL, not to mention Walker Buehler who has been on the shelf for just under a year. That being said, the Dodgers need to try something else. After giving up six earned runs in three innings tonight, Syndergaard's ERA sits at 7.16. The Dodgers have lost eight of his 12 starts, including the last four.
At this point, give Gavin Stone another shot at the rotation. The young right-hander struggled in his first few big league appearances, but there's no way for a guy like him to get better other than working through the struggles at the big league level. Throw him right back into the fire. Even if he struggles, the Dodgers are able to gather plenty of information on a top prospect that they view as a key part of their future rotation.
5. LAFC settles for scoreless draw against Atlanta
Despite accumulating 13 shots on goal, LAFC settled for a scoreless draw against Atlanta United, Wednesday, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Anthony Bautista.
Just three days after a disappointing loss in the Concacaf Champion’s League final, LAFC took the field at BMO stadium looking for a spark against Atlanta United in the club’s return to MLS play.
LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo knows his team can’t dwell on the result, but he wanted to keep business going as usual.
“Everybody in this in that locker room has been in that position before so there's no reason to panic at all. Just keep going and keep playing in the same manner that things will take care of themselves,” Cherundolo said.
Despite creating a plethora of scoring chances LAFC was unable to get on the board, mostly thanks to Atlanta’s goalkeeper, Bradley Guzan, who earned a clean sheet on the road during the 0-0 draw.
6. Soto and Sanchez power San Diego past Seattle, 10-3
After an offensive outage on Tuesday, the Padres bounce back with 17 hits on Wednesday afternoon to split the series with Seattle, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Gabriel Santiago.
The Padres (29-33) have alternated wins and losses every game since May 27. On Wednesday against the Mariners (30-31), that trend continued in front of a rowdy daytime crowd at Petco Park as the Padres trounced the Mariners by a score of 10-3.
Notably, Juan Soto and Gary Sanchez led the way–the former went 5-5 with four RBI. All in all, the Padres produced their 10 runs on Wednesday behind 17 hits. Additionally, the pitching for San Diego was sharp all afternoon with the exception of reliever Drew Carlton who gave up all three Mariner runs.
Ultimately, Padre starter Michael Wacha improved to a club-best 6-2 record in 2023 behind six innings and seven strikeouts, surrendering only two hits in the midweek contest. Yet, in Jekyll & Hyde fashion, San Diego still remains fourth in the NL West–eight games behind first-place Arizona.
