1. Bronny James collapses, suffers cardiac arrest
Bronny James, the son of Lakers star LeBron James, was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition now and no longer in the ICU.
USC All-American Bronny James collapsed on the court Monday and suffered a cardiac arrest, according to a statement from the family.
James, the son of Lakers star LeBron James, was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition and no longer in the intensive care unit.
“Yesterday (Monday) while practicing, Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest,” read the statement released Tuesday morning. “Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition and no longer in the ICU. We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information. LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”
2. Padres hit a speed bump while inching closer to “must win or else” territory
If things don't turn around, the Padres season may be in danger, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Fernando Ramirez.
Monday was not the result the San Diego Padres needed. They lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4, who have been in a funk since the last time they faced the Padres.
Their last series facing off ended in a Pirates sweep of the Padres. They have not fared well against Pittsburgh.
“Every major league team presents challenges,” manager Bob Melvin said. “Obviously, they’ll have a little confidence beating us over there. They haven’t played too terribly well here recently, but early on, they had some really good swings and capitalize when they needed to.”
The woes continued Monday night as pitcher You Darvish was really off his game. He pitched 4.1 innings, gave up eight hits, seven runs, and allowed four home runs.
3. An overview of the Ducks prospect pool: Goalies
The Anaheim Ducks have a number of talented goaltenders in their system and The Sporting Tribune’s Derek Lee breaks them down for you.
The Ducks’ prospect pool was recently ranked No. 3 by NHL Network. While some of the names may be familiar to fans, others are not. Today, I’m taking a look at the goaltenders in the Ducks’ prospect pool.
Qualifications: Anyone who is 23 and under who has not played a full season in the NHL and is either still unsigned or on their entry-level contract, which is why you won’t see Lukáš Dostál here.
4. Angel City’s World Cup watch parties show the growth of women’s soccer
Angel City fans have showed up in large numbers to support their team's players at World Cup watch parties and The Sporting Tribune’s Kamran Nia was there to capture the scene.
Angel City defender Ali Riley was expecting few people in the United States to be watching her national team New Zealand and her face Norway on July 20. The kick-off time was 12 a.m. in Los Angeles when many of her hometown supporters would typically be asleep.
But overcoming yawns, what ensued was nothing like what Riley expected. Hundreds of fans packed two watch parties hosted by Angel City in Los Angeles, cheering her until around 2 a.m. The watch parties happened at 33 Taps locations in Culver City and Silver Lake and included giveaways and an appearance from Angel City co-founder Julie Uhrman, among others.
The supporters vibrantly rooted for their captain, Riley, as New Zealand secured a 1-0 victory, their first World Cup win in history.
“Here I was thinking nobody would watch a Football Ferns game that kicked off at midnight,” said Riley in a Twitter post. Then I see @weareangelcity merch in the stands, videos from the watch parties, and hundreds of messages from LA. I can’t describe how much your support means. I love you all!”
5. Blue Jays outlast Dodgers in series opener at Chavez Ravine, win 6-3
The Dodgers scored early but came up short in extra innings in their return home, writes The Sporting Tribune’s Grant Mona.
In a tight game throughout, between two solid baseball teams on opposite ends of North America, the Blue Jays edged the Dodgers out in 11 innings Monday night. The team returned to Dodger Stadium after a nine game road trip and came up just short in extras to a scrappy Blue Jays squad.
Max Muncy’s RBI single in the first and Jason Heyward’s tenth home run of the year put the Dodgers up 2-0 early, but after that the bats died down. Coming off of a great series offensively the Dodgers got the bats going early and fizzled out until the eighth inning when Muncy came through again. He blasted a game tying no-doubter to deep right field to knot the game at three and give the Dodgers their first run since that fourth inning when Heyward homered. After failing to walk Toronto off in the ninth and tenth, the Blue Jays took advantage of an error from Chris Taylor at third in the eleventh and ended up scoring three runs off of Phil Bickford to take control of the game in extra innings and eventually put this one away.
